From the immense set of buildings which used to compose the monument from the XIV to the XVIII century, little has escaped to the systematic destruction made by the city urban planning. Part of the pieces, were even displaced to other parts of town like fractions of the gothic cloister, two monumental renaissance marble porches, the grave of Andre Resende, part of the main church altar and the complete chapel of ‘Senhora do Rosário’ – including its private treasure – were taken to other city temples.
The only gothic remains in this monastery are in the west and north part of the building, where it is possible to see the roof arches and vaults from the XIV century, supported in low granite columns, with square basis and ornamented capitols with naturalistic motives of naïve inspiration. This section was reformed in the XVI century, when the wood roofs where replaced by carved stone archery, decorated with motives typical of King Manuel and King Joao III time. Here are also the carved symbols of the heraldic Portuguese orders of Christ and Avis, as well as curious elements decorated with oval motives, ropes, balls, pines, and naturalistic vegetables.
